Kay Groschke Lightsey 70, of Bryan, passed early Tuesday morning, February 17, 2015 at her home in Robertson County. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday February 19, 2015 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday at the funeral home with Reverend Rick Sitton of First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Rest-Ever Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryan.
Kay was born August 27, 1944 in Houston, Texas to Helen Louise Krueger and Clarence Edward Groschke. She grew up in the Heights area of Houston and graduated from Reagan High School. She graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College in Huntsville with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1966. While attending Sam Houston State, she met a fellow student, J. Gary Lightsey whom she married in 1967. Kay and her family lived in Temple for 25 years before moving to Bryan in 2001. She was a third grade teacher and retired from the Temple ISD after 20 years of service.
Kay loved her grandkids and they loved her. Their favorite name for her was “Gigi”. Kay loved to bake all kinds of goodies with her grandkids and also loved to cross stitch. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bryan and the Retired Teachers Association. She also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Crestview. She loved flowers and helped at Nan’s Blossom Shop in Bryan during Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband J. Gary Lightsey of Bryan; son and daughter-in-law Joel and Kimberly Lightsey of Cypress, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Joni and John Graham of Cameron, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, George and Patty Groschke of Houston; five grandchildren, Emily Graham, John Pierce Graham, Owen Graham, Jacob Lightsey, and Matthew Lightsey; and several nephews, nieces, and a host friends.
