David was born to Coy and Blanche (Owen) Simmons in George, Texas on October 10, 1942. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 1961 before enlisting in the United States Army. After serving his country, he graduated from Allen Academy in 1966 and then attended Sam Houston State University. David met his wife, Catherine, in 1964 at Central Baptist Church.
David and Catherine married on July 15, 1967. They welcomed their first child, David Ray Simmons, Jr. in 1968. The family grew to four with the birth of daughter Courtney Ann in 1973.
Through the years, David enjoyed hunting, coaching at Little League East, and attending his granddaughters’ softball games and swimming meets.
Being a PaPa came naturally to David. Malyn Rae, Blane Ann, Lauren Grace (Gracie) and Sarah Kate (Katie) were the apple of his eye. Anybody that connected with him knew just how proud he was to have four Fightin’ Texas Aggie granddaughters and college athletes. God also blessed him with “grandsons in love” Caedmon, Kai and Kingston (Catfish) Parker. David wore TCU purple when Caedmon was on the mound for the Horned Frogs. Any other time, you can bet he was wearing marron and cheering on the Aggies.
David was welcomed to Heaven by his parents, his second parents James and Sammie Hollis, brother-in-love Sam Hollis; nephew James Robertson Hollis, III, and other family and close friends. He is survived by his wife, Catherine; their children David and daughter-in-love Melissa Simmons, and Courtney and son-in-love Jon David Walker; his sister Wilma Simmons; his Hollis brothers and their wives Jimmy and Carol and Haden and Rhonna; seven grandchildren; and his spiritual mentors Brent and Kori Parker.
His friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate David’s life in the way he would want to be remembered - as a humble man who loved his family beyond measure.
