Annie was one of 10 children and spent her early years working on the family farm participating in family chores such as chopping and picking cotton. These early challenging years on the farm proved pivotal in building character traits that would help to mold her into the strong woman that she would become. After her father died in 1935, the family farm had to be sold and her mother would move the family several times before they settled in Priddy, Texas. Annie graduated from Priddy High School in 1942 and then decided she needed to find a job to support herself. At that time, she and a girlfriend rode the bus from Hamilton, Texas to Dallas, Texas where she found work as a bookkeeper for Aetna Life Insurance. As World War II ramped up, she utilized her strong work ethic to help her country where possible. She left Aetna Insurance and was hired by North American Aviation in Dallas. She spent many long hours and days driving rivets together on the P51 Mustang airplane which was a vital resource for the U.S. Military during the war. Being involved with the riveting work she became part of the “Rosie the Riveter” group of women who filled factory positions when men left for the war. As the war started tapering down, she eventually left Dallas and went back home for a short period of time before moving back to Dallas where she would meet the love of her life George T. Garrett. They were married in 1949, the same year George was hired as a Texas Highway Patrolman. George’s job required that they move around the state several times over the next 30 years with assignments in Waco, Atlanta, Wichita Falls, Seymour, Brady and finally in Bryan. During these years their family was made complete with the birth of their 3 sons Douglass, Ben and Larry.
Annie was employed as a bookkeeper by Montgomery Wards in downtown Bryan before moving with the company to the Manor East Mall location. After 18 years she retired from Montgomery Wards while making many friends and long-lasting relationships during this time. It is truly remarkable that Annie would complete her long work day and then come home to be a supportive wife and loving mother. The devotion to her family while being employed was ever-challenging, however, her early years of working on the farm instilled the amazing qualities that provided a wonderful home to her three sons and working husband. Annie found lots of joy in cheering for her sons in their many sporting events and was a loyal supporter at their games. This support would continue with her grandchildren.
In retirement, Annie loved to quilt and spent many hours making beautiful quilts for each of her grandchildren and others. When you went to her home you might find her cooking her special hominy casserole or her much coveted snickerdoodle cookies, which were her grandchildren’s favorite. She loved to have visits from her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to hear about their activities, adventures and accomplishments. Eventually Annie moved to Carriage Inn retirement home where she lived for about 10 years. She made many friends there with both the staff and residents who she loved dearly.
Annie, better known as “MawMaw”, will be missed dearly by her family and friends who are so thankful and blessed to have had her in their lives. She and George were long time members of the First Methodist Church of Bryan.
