A memorial service will be held at Crescent Baptist Church, 1794 Susie Baker Rd. NE, Townsend, Ga., Sunday, September 13, 2015, at 3 p.m., with Pastor Cade Bazemore , and Rev. Fred Mc Iver officiating. Family will be receiving friends from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m.
Born in Macon, Ga, he attended Pearl Stephens Elementary School and graduated from Lanier High School in 1943. He earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Valparaiso Technical Institute. Mr. Sowell worked for Robins AFB for a short time and then began a 45 plus year career in radio broadcasting, retiring from WMAZ as Chief Radio Engineer. He was the first full time employee of WMAZ Television in 1953. He was a long time member of Cherokee Heights United Methodist Church in Macon, after retirement he moved his membership to Crescent Baptist Church in Crescent, Ga.
Mr. Sowell was an active a member of the Golden E Exchange Club in Macon.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon V Sowell, Sr., his mother Katie Mae Sowell, brother Leon V. Sowell, Jr., and wife of 59 years, Mary G Sowell. He is survived by his son William Grier (Debbie) Sowell of Lizella, grandson William (Renee) Sowell of Richmond Hills, grandson Nicholas (Alannah) Sowell of Macon, 3 great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
