William Hunter Morgan, 87, a resident of Brunswick, passed away Friday morning, July 30, at the Brunswick Campus of Southeast Georgia Health System. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Dr. A.C. Cramer officiating. Entombment will take place in Palmetto Cemetery at a later date. Ron Scarboro, James Allen, William Lewis, William Jackson, Richard Edgy, and Jeremy Petro will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Ahmed Elsharkawi, Otis Roberson, William D. Wise, Steve Oldaker, Wes Oldaker, Ted R. Whitten, Bruce Lowie, and the Glynn Academy Class of 1941.
A native of Jasper, Florida, Mr. Morgan was the son of the late Elirene Perry Morgan Jackson and John Hunter Morgan. He moved to Brunswick at the age of 12 and was a 1941 graduate of Glynn Academy. He was a former business owner, a part time bookkeeper and pharmacist assistant, and retired from Hercules, Inc. and Southeast Georgia Health System. He was also a carrier for the Brunswick News for over thirty years and was once named Georgia’s Carrier of the Year. He was also named a Community Hero in 2003 by the Glynn County Commission for his countless deeds for those less fortunate.
Mr. Morgan was a veteran of World War II, having served as a Pharmacist’s Mate in the South Pacific with the United States Navy. He enjoyed ceramics, raising orchids, working with stained glass, and building doll houses, one which took first prize in the Veterans Administration State Art Competition for the blind. Until earlier this year he enjoyed conducting weekly ceramic classes with the residents of Magnolia Manor. He also won several awards for outside holiday decorations.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jeanne Reeves Morgan, and their daughter, Rhonda Morgan-Butts, both of Brunswick. Other survivors include sisters Mrs. Ruth (Buddy) Gufford, Mrs. June Dickerson, and Mrs. Lavada Goldberg, all of Gainesville, Florida, and Mrs. Ann Mitchell of Fort Myers, Florida, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his only grandchild, Jessica L. Butts, in 1999, and sisters Mrs. Maxine (Harry) Fewox of Morrow, Georgia, and Mrs. Joyce (Jack) Shinn of Orlando, Florida, and infant brother Vance Wayne Morgan of Jasper, Florida.
The family will receive friends Monday evening, August 2, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Edo Miller and Sons. In lieu of flowers, contributions may also be made to Magnolia Manor of St. Simons in his memory. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com
