Wallace Smith “Smitty” Ledbetter, Jr. departed this life on May 14th, 2013. He was born in Waycross, GA on August 30th, 1930 to Wallace Smith Ledbetter and Fraser Livingston Ledbetter. Smitty attended Glynn County Schools and graduated from Glynn Academy in 1948. He actively participated in football, track, and tennis. Smitty attended Georgia Tech where he was a true Rambling Wreck, joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, and was a member of the NROTC and graduated with a B.S. in Architecture.
On September 20th, 1952, he married his wife of 60 years, Jane Fendig Ledbetter. Smitty served as an officer in the United States Navy. After his service in the Navy, he completed his Masters of Architecture degree at Georgia Tech.
Smitty and Jane returned to Saint Simons, where they made their home and had four children: Wallace Smith Ledbetter III, Susan Jane Ledbetter, James Fendig Ledbetter, and Glenn Wright Ledbetter. Smitty served actively in the community as a Jaycee and received the honor of young man of the year, a member of the Rotary Club, and member of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. Smitty loved his God and his family and served in many capacities as a member of Christ Church Frederica.
Smitty served his professional career as an architect in Brunswick, Georgia. Many buildings in the Southeast Georgia region were designed by W.S. Ledbetter, Jr. and his assistants.
Smitty is survived by his wife and four children, and eight grandchildren; Simon Reid Ledbetter, Jennifer Brooke Bateh, Stacey Jane Ledbetter, Meredith Kelly Bateh, John Alexandre Kundycki, Emily Danielle Kundycki, James Wright Ledbetter, and Anna Jane Ledbetter. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Mary Laurel Ledbetter.
The family gives grateful thanks to the following and their staff: Dr. A. Wade Strickland; Drs. Theodore and Emily Feely; Dr. William G. Grubb, Okeefenokee EMS; The Senior Care Center; the numerous nurses, aides, and staff of the Southeast Georgia Health System; the staff of Heartland Hospice and, Reverend Ted Clarkson of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, Darien.
The funeral service will held at Christ Church Frederica on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 11am with a reception to follow in the Parrish House. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to Saint Andrews Episcopal Church of Darien, Ga.
