born in Cartersville, GA on May 23, 1934, son of the late Dr. James Willingham Stanford III and
the late Loretta Watson Stanford.
Bob is survived by his children Robert Stanford Jr of Brunswick, Ga. and Wendy Stanford-
Perez of Jupiter, Fl and his grandchildren, Chelsea Stanford, Nolan Stanford, Joshua Guerra,
Hannah Perez.
Bob grew up in Cartersville Ga. He attended Cartersville High School where he played football.
He graduated from Darlington School in Rome, Ga. Bob went on to attend the University of
Georgia. He served in the United States Air Force from 1954-1958.
On December 28, 1960, Bob married the love of his life, Gwen Slaughter, also from Cartersville,
Ga. He started his career with VanWinkle Construction Company in Atlanta, Ga. Several years
later, on a wing and prayer, he and Gwen moved their family to St. Simons Island to put down
their roots.
Bob started his own business, Stanford Construction Company, and built many houses and
oversaw construction projects in and around the area. During his retirement, Bob started
another business, Antique Restorations. He restored antiques and worked on small projects.
He was a talented builder and wood worker. He lovingly crafted many wooden toys he gave to
friends and family throughout the years.
Bob and Gwen belonged to Sea Palms Club and enjoyed playing golf and tennis. They had an
extended group of friends.
Bob loved his family more than anything. He was a wonderful husband and parent. His open
arms and open home provided a boundless source of unconditional love and support.
Bob had an “extended family” on the island including so many special people who loved him
and whom he loved in return. He always had a joke, a smile and good energy to offer all. On
any given day he would greet friends and neighbors as they passed by his house on east beach.
Bob had the privilege of great love after the death of his beloved Gwen with the late Helen
Alexander of St. Simons Island. The families blended and remain very close.
Bob was a servant of his church, St. Simons Presbyterian where he was a youth leader, deacon
and elder. He devoted much of his time to the growth of the church.
There will be a celebration of Bob’s life on November 18, 2023 at St Simons Presbyterian
Church at 11 am in the Garden. A casual celebration will follow at Wolf Island Oyster Co from
12:30-2.
In lieu of flowers or donations, please love and respect one another! This would have made
Bob happiest.
