Olive Hammer Jones

Olive H. Jones, 95, of Sea Island, died peacefully Wednesday, December 5, 2012. She was the loving wife of the late H. Ellis Jones of Pottstown, PA and Sea Island, GA. They had been married for 58 years.

Born January 6, 1917 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Birchall and Olive W. Hammer, she grew up in Elkins Park, PA, with summers spent in Ocean City, NJ. She graduated from Cheltenham High School and with highest honors from Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA. Active in charity work throughout her long life, Mrs. Jones served as President of the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and on the Board of Directors of The Visiting Nurse Association of Pottstown, PA and was a sustaining member of the Junior League.

A resident of Sea Island since 1985, she was an enthusiastic world traveler, having made 37 trips abroad, an avid painter, a member of the Ocean Forest Golf Club and a past-President of the Sea Island Garden Club. She was a parishioner of Christ Church Frederica.

She is survived by two children: Mary Ellis Carsten and her husband, Jack, of Los Altos, CA, and Donald Jones and his wife, Carol, of East Greenwich, RI; six grandchildren: Donald Jones Jr., Brian Jones, Colin Jones, Scott Carsten, Elizabeth Leigh and Amy Rhoads; and seven great-grandchildren: Haley Carsten, Jake Leigh, Kyra Leigh, Evan Rhoads, Henry Rhoads, Ellis Jones and Adele Jones. She is also survived by three sisters: Dorothy Hammer of Lafayette Hill, PA, Phyllis Duin of Redmond, WA and Lee Scott of Lower Gwynedd, PA.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, December 17, at Christ Church Frederica with Rev. Stephen McWhorter officiating. Private burial will follow in Christ Church Cemetery with Donald Jones, Donald Jones Jr., Brian Jones, Colin Jones, Jack Carsten and Scott Carsten serving as pallbearers.
