Nell Deloach Poppell

Nell Deloach Poppell, 87, of Darien, died Friday, January 14, 2011 at her residence. Graveside rites will be held 11AM Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at St. Andrews Cemetery in Darien with Rev. Michael Warren and Minister Kenneth W. Rhodes officiating. Jason Poppell, Brian Poppell, James Thomas, Robert Thomas, Joe Poppell, and Anthony Beckham will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Staff of Heartland Hospice, Helen Brewer, Terry Lynn Rhodes, Intrepid Home Health, Charles “Chunk” Jones, Rev. Bill Brown, Sherriff Steve Jessup, Donnie Howard, Kenny Williams, Larry Blackston, Corabelle Owens, Dr. James Snow and Steve Crowder will be honorary pallbearers.

Born August 6, 1923 in Tattnall County Georgia to the late Robert C. and Lettie Folsom Deloach, Mrs. Poppell was a graduate of Georgia Southern University she was a former educator in the McIntosh County School System, and was the wife of Thomas Hardwick Poppell who was the Sherriff of McIntosh County, 1948 – 1980. At the time of Mr. Poppell’s death she served as interim Sherriff of McIntosh County. Mrs. Poppell was a member of the Legion Auxillary, First Baptist Church of Darien, and The Missionary Society of First Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, teaching others, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Reese Deloach and I.J. Deloach, and a sister, Marie D. Skipper.

Survivors include a son, Thomas H. Poppell Jr. and wife Lori of Darien, two grandsons, Thomas Brian Poppell and wife Ashley, and Jason Hardwick Poppell and fiance’ Alisha, a great granddaughter, Taylor Brianna Poppell all of Darien, a brother in law, Adam S. Poppell Jr. and wife Ann of Darien, nephews, Henry A. Skipper Jr., Homer Deloach, Edwin Deloach, Richard Delaoch, Adam S. Poppell, III, Ty Poppell, Joe Poppell, a niece Nancy Thagard and several other nieces and nephews.
