Nancy Schroder Torbett, age 89, died with family March 31, 2017 on Saint Simons Island, GA. She was born on August 22, 1927 in Charleston, SC and has been a resident of Glynn County for the last 61 years. Mrs. Torbett attended primary school in Charleston, SC and was a graduate of Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC.
Funeral services will be held at Christ Church, Frederica on St. Simons Island, Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at 10:30 AM. She is survived by her loving daughters Terry Torbett Swift and her husband John of Marietta, GA and Lisa Torbett and Hamp Stevens of Saint Simons Island, GA. She also leaves behind a foster son Craig Entwistle and his wife Leslie, of Saint Simons Island, GA. Additional survivors include three devoted grandchildren, Jack Swift and his wife Lisa of Evergreen Colorado; Shannon Swift Darke and her husband Jim of Cumming, GA; David Paine Swift and his wife Shannon of San Francisco, CA. Also surviving Mrs. Torbett are four great grandsons, two great granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jack Torbett , their son Jack (Skipper) Torbett Jr. also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Torbett was a woman of many accomplishments. Mrs. Torbett was a member of Christ Church, Frederica. She served on the Vestry of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and was a member of the board of visitors, Kanuga Episcopal Conferences, Hendersonville, NC. She once held the honor of being Miss Charleston, Charleston, SC. She served as President of the Brunswick Georgia Junior Woman’s Club and was Young Woman of the Year for Glynn County. Mrs. Torbett served as Chief Voter Registrar of Glynn County and was a former President of the Georgia Association of Registrars. She served as a Regent of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Frederica Chapter.
Mrs. Torbett her husband Jack were avid travelers. She loved playing bridge and enjoyed participation in the Little Theater. For the past two years she was a resident of Marshes Edge on St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Christ Church Frederica, Faith Works or Hospice of the Golden Isles.
