Mary Henchel Bliven was born on May 6, 1924, in Lancaster, Pa. Her parents were William Paul Henchel and Beulah Faust. Mary grew up in Lancaster County among the Amish people living there. She always spoke lovingly of her younger years with grandparents, uncles and aunts. Mary was especially fond of her grandfather who taught her how to play piano, a skill she mastered and enjoyed her whole life.
Mary had great art talent and attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art, graduating with a degree in fashion. She went to work in New York City where she met the love of her life, John Bliven, and married him six weeks later. They were married for almost 60 years until John's death in 2003. They enjoyed ice skating, skiing, traveling, golfing and raising their three children, Barbara, John and Peter in Long Island, N.Y. During that time, Mary continued to develop her artistic talent and attended the Isabelle O'Neil School of the Art of the Painted Finish in New York City. She designed and painted many beautiful items and was recognized for her outstanding talent. Mary was always interested in fashion and sewed many of her own clothes. She also had a successful career as a Realtor.
In 1987, Mary and John decided that St. Simons Island was where they wanted to retire. They joined Christ Church where Mary played bells for many years. Mary continued her interest in art, taking classes and painting many beautiful pictures. She served on the board of Glynn Art. She also continued for passion for golf, playing and attending tournaments.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; a brother, John Henchel; and her husband, John S. Bliven. She is survived by her three children, Barbara Kersten Worchester of New York, John S. Bliven Jr. (Carolyn) of Saint Simons Island, Ga., and Peter Bliven (Jennifer) of Laurel Hollow, N.Y.; five grandchildren, Aaron Laskowski of Bellport, N.Y., Martha Bliven of St. Simons Island, Ga., Brooke Bliven of New York City, and Allison and Emma Bliven, both of Laurel Hollow, N.Y.
