Mrs. Rouse was a native of Brunswick and was the daughter of Miniam Clara Krauss and Hilton Douglas Thomas.
Mrs. Rouse was a gifted educator with a specialty as well as gifting in assisting children with a wide array of learning disabilities. What was particularity remarkable about Madeline, she had also suffered from severe learning disabilities and attended school during an era when the appropriate academic resources and services were not available. With the combination of an early childhood dream of becoming a teacher, determination, a brilliant mind, profound insight and compassion, Madeline impacted the destinies of many struggling children in Southeast Georgia when she opened “The Reading Therapy Clinic”. In the span of years of the clinic’s operation, Madeline created a refuge for not only academic remediation but also healing and hope for children who had experienced failure and discouragement in other learning arenas. Many considered Madeline Rouse “ a women ahead of her time” in the field of Special education which was clearly evidenced by her phenomenal success rate for teaching children to read who had histories of failure in other learning environments.
