Earl was a native of Brunswick, graduating from Glynn Academy in 1964. While in high school, he sang with the GA Quartet and it was there, he met his future wife, Shirley. After graduation, Earl attended North Georgia Technical College, obtaining a degree in Electronics in July of 1966. Within a month of graduation, he landed a position with Georgia Power at Plant McManus working as an auxiliary. He then married his childhood sweetheart, Shirley, in October of that year and the couple started their family. In 1989, Earl was promoted to shift supervisor, a position he held until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the Masonic Ocean Lodge No. 214 and a longtime member of College Place Methodist Church. Earl enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid runner, running up to 6 miles per day. He also loved spending time with his grandbabies. He will be missed.
His parents, Leo Earl Johnson, Sr. and Pairlee Alma Daniels Johnson preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Shirley Greene Johnson; a son, Roderick Earl Johnson (Peggy) of Brunswick; two daughters, Rhoda Leigh Johnson of Brunswick and Wanda Gail Speh (Craig) of Bainbridge; seven grandchildren, Ernest Robert White of Brunswick, Dalton Johnson of Augusta, Felicia Mildred Turner (Dylan) of Brunswick, Alicia Julie Speh of Valdosta, Craig “Junior” Speh of Bainbridge, Olivia McKenzie Speh of Bainbridge and Cheyenne Marie Speh of Bainbridge; three great-granddaughters, Delilah Roselyn Yates, Emma Rae Yates and Kamdyn Lee White; three nieces, Patricia Lynn Johnson, Danielle Elizabeth Johnson and Laura Sue Ellen Johnson; a nephew, Daniel Anthony Johnson, Jr. and a brother, Daniel Anthony Johnson, Sr. of the Philippines.
The funeral service will be held Friday, June 2, 2023 at 11:30 am at College Place Methodist Church with Reverend Scott Stanfill officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time. Pallbearers will be Robert Greene, Dustin Greene, Steven Greene, Avera Greene, Jr., Ernest White and Craig Speh. Burial will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
