Mrs. Thornton was a native of St. Augustine, Florida and had been a resident of Brunswick and Waverly since 1945. She was a graduate of Glynn Academy class of 1955. She was a Charter member of the College Place United Methodist Church and a member of the United Methodist Women and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She taught Vacation Bible School for many years.
She won many awards for her Art Works and she loved her family and enjoyed Genealogy Work for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald B. Thornton, Sr., her parents, Isaac and Bessie Mae Gibbs and a brother, Robert Gibbs, Brother-in-law, George Sutherland and brother-in-law, T. I. Weston.
Survivors are a daughter, Debbie T. Mallard (Thomas) of Brunswick, a son, Donald B. Thornton, Jr. (Connie) of Brunswick, three grandsons, Matthew S. Thornton (Amber) of Brunswick, Paul B. Thornton of Waverly, Ga., Scott E. Mallard of Brunswick, two great granddaughters, Tristan M.. Thornton of Greenfield, Ind. And Katherine Thornton of Brunswick, five sisters, Patricia Iva Dellinger of Haughton, La., Dorothy Thigpen (Willie) of Cleveland, Ga., Shirley Smith (Lewis) of Eaton, Ga., Melinda Parrish (Jack) of Columbia, S.C., and Connie East (David) of Ala, two sister-in-laws, Trudie Gibbs of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dottie M. Sutherland of Union Hall, Va., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Saturday October 16, 2010 from the College Placed United Methodist Church with rev. Rob Grotheer officiating. Interment will follow in Palmetto Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be: Bob Rice, Richard Moon, Mike Stopchuck, George Shirley, Russell Clark, Horace Shurling, and David Sylvester.
Honorary pallbearers will be: Buster Connell, Dusty Dowdy, Steve Holmes, Neil Gilbert, Robert Jones, Curtis Tucker, Rev. Franklin Pierce, Members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, Joyce’s Disciple Bible Study Classes, Glynn Academy Class of 1955, and Charter Members of College Place United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends in the Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM Friday night and request those wishing may make contributions to the College Place United Methodist Church or the Hospice of the Golden Isles.
