John was born on July 6, 1936 to Linden Joseph and Claire Cecilia (Romer) Melancon in Honolulu Hawaii.
After graduating from high school in Honolulu, he went on to study at the University of Hawai’i. He lived
in New Orleans before moving to New York.
In 1987, he met his wife Wendy Ruth Carell. They wed in Morristown, NJ June 26, 1988, blending their
families. They lived in Morristown, NJ until moving to St. Simons Island, GA in 2004.
John had two sons, Brian (Julie) Melancon of Camden, NY and Andrew Melancon of Middletown, NY; two
step-daughters Kara Powis (Kate Tierney) of Savannah, GA and Tina (David) Powis-Dow of Germantown,
TN; and a nephew Douglas Dechance of Phoenix, Az. He had four grandchildren: Katelynn Melancon, Kai Powis-Dow, Madeline Melancon, and Calvin Melancon. He was predeceased by his granddaughter
Lindsay Melancon.
John worked as an administrative service manager for the New York Stock Exchange for 45 years. By the
time he retired in 2001, he had made many friends and was well respected.
John was a peaceful and happy man who loved his family and friends. He and his wife Wendy were
accomplished dancers, and loved traveling the world teaching ballroom dance on cruise ships. They
founded the Golden Isles Dancers and hosted many dance parties on and around St. Simon’s Island.
John was also an avid reader and could often be found in a comfortable chair in his free time.
The family requests that all flowers and notes are sent to Wendy Carrell Melancon at Marsh’s Edge.
There will be a memorial at Marsh’s Edge on February 22nd at 2pm.
