Joe Clarence Ham was not the name given him by his parents. It was simply JC Ham. For years, he was JC to family and friends. 
When his family came to California, and tried to register him for school, that he found out that JC was not a name the school registrar would accept.  Evidently, no amount of documentation would convince the school system to let him register as JC. So his parents finally gave in and put down Joe Clarence Ham.   I loved it when we were at a family gathering, and those southern twang pronunciations were heard.  Everyone there, even my mother, called him JC.   I think William Shakespeare was wrong when he wrote:"What's in a name?"  There is history and connections in a name of a person, and his proper name should be remembered.
