Joan Marie Nichols Miles, 72, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, died January 19, 2024 after an extended illness. A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11am March 1, 2024 at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life Reception will follow in The Parish Hall at Christ Church.
Born in Waycross, Georgia on January 18, 1952, to parents Aubrey Flint Nichols and Joyce Davis Nichols, she was raised in Douglas, Georgia, and was a graduate of Coffee High School. She received her B.S.Ed. from Presbyterian College and her M.S.Ed. from Valdosta State University. She was a career educator in the Glynn County and Coffee County school systems and held teaching positions in Atlanta and Camden, South Carolina as well.
Joan is survived by her mother, Joyce Nichols Shelander of St. Simons Island; sons Flint Huff (Val) of Tampa, Florida and Jacob Miles (Jessie) of St. Simons Island; step-sister Anne Shelander Floyd (Randall) of Augusta; and grandchildren Jackson Huff, Walker Huff and Andersen Miles. She was preceded in death by her father; her step-father, Albert Shelander; her sister, Beth Nichols; and her step-brother, BB Shelander.
Joan was a member of the Golden Isles Strummers; Charter member of the Commodore Oliver Bowen Chapter, NSDAR; member of the Fort Frederica Chapter, NSDAR; and former member of the Douglas Golf and Country Club.
