Janice Patch Mitchell, born on November 21, 1957, to Eldridge and Ethel Patch, has left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. As the youngest of four children, alongside her brothers Glenn, Burrell, and Gerald Patch, Janice's spirit brought joy to the lives of those around her. Born and raised in Picayune, MS, she embraced the values of her church and her community, carrying them with her throughout her life.
Janice's commitment to the Lord was steadfast, evident in her faithful attendance and membership at Old Palestine Baptist Church. In August 1975, she embarked on the next chapter of her life when she married, creating a nurturing home for their two daughters, Jessica, and Monica, who arrived in 1977 and 1980, respectively. In 1986, Janice and her family relocated to Titusville, Florida, where they put down roots and flourished.
An exceptional woman of many talents, Janice played the piano with grace and skill, as any who heard her play can attest. Her creativity extended to her sewing and embroidery, starting with the dresses she made for her daughters during their early years. The kitchen was another favorite location where she delighted in cooking and baking—her chicken and dumplings meal remaining a cherished family favorite, despite the occasional mess she made. “I cooked, so you clean!”
Janice possessed an uncanny knack for seeking out the best deals while shopping, earning her the title of “extreme couponer.” Her enthusiasm for a bargain was eclipsed only by her immense love for her family. In 2012, she moved to Georgia, excited for the opportunity to be closer to "her babies.” Her sewing skills continued to shine as she sewed customized shirts for her grandkids, ensuring they would be reminded of her affection on every special occasion. Janice also had a habit of indulging her grandkids with junk food, relishing in their laughter and delight, and soaking up every moment shared with them.
Two characteristics that defined Janice were her unabashed candor, and her profound love for her family. She never shied away from speaking her mind, offering wisdom and wit to those fortunate enough to be in her presence. Her daughters meant the world to her, and she raised them to stand up for themselves with strength and poise. But it was the grandkids who held the key to her heart—she poured immeasurable love into their lives, leaving a legacy of devotion.
Janice Patch Mitchell passed away on June 25, 2023, in Brunswick, GA. While her physical presence may have departed, she leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of her surviving brother, Burrell, her two daughters, Jessica, and Monica, and her six beloved grandchildren: Mitchell, Mason, William, Amy, Marshall, and Elizabeth. The impact she made on her family and friends will forever be etched in their souls, serving as a testament to a life well-lived.
In honor of Janice's memory, we will celebrate her life from 5–7 PM on Friday, June 30, 2023, at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, GA. A graveside service will be held in Picayune, MS, later this fall.
