Helen C, Haskins Padgett , age 99, of Brunswick, GA graduated to the Church Triumphant on September 28, 2023 after a short illness. She was born July 28, 1924 in Lyons, GA to the late William T. Haskins and the late Willie Louise Harrison.
Right after graduation from high school, Helen and her father moved to Brunswick and went to work at the J. A. Jones Shipyard where Liberty Ships were built for the war effort. She worked in the Civil Engineering Department. In 1951 she met and married James B. (J. B.) Padgett.
Helen became a member of First Baptist Church in 1952 where she was a very active and faithful member. She worked at His Kids Day Care where the kids affectionately called her “Miss Heaven”, she helped in vacation bible school, headed up the flower committee for many years which included decorating the church for Christmas and Easter as well as the many banquets held at the church. She was very active in Sunday School and was a member of the choir for 40 years. She was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club and won many first place awards for her flower arranging. Helen loved working in her yard and one of her biggest joys was growing beautiful roses which she would share with family and friends. She was a member of O.E.S. Neptune Chapter and held several positions a highlight of which was being named Grand Chaplain for the state of Georgia and representing Georgia at General Grand Chapter held in Toronto, Canada.
Helen loved taking care of her family and cooking wonderful southern style food for them. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister and she loved telling little jokes. She was such an inspiration to her family and so many others.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J. B. Padgett, sisters Mildred Pharis, Vivian Hansen, Sara Orecchio, Freddie Bethune and Betty Barnabei.
Helen is survived by her daughter Cynthia Gilbert Johnston and son-in-law Bruce of Clayton, GA, granddaughter Christy Mallette of Wilmington, NC, stepson Ben Padgett and wife Terri of Marietta, GA, a brother Bill Haskins and wife Gloria of Brunswick, GA and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Oct. 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at 11:00 am in Twitty Chapel of First Baptist Church Brunswick with burial to follow at Palmetto Cemetery.
