Gregory King Sr.

Gregory King, Sr., 60, of Brunswick, departed this life Monday, January 2, 2017 at Hospice of The Golden Isles. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday, January 6, 2017 in the chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Jim McIlrath officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.

Born November 29, 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Arthur C. and Irene D. King, he was a retired Police Officer with the Cleveland Police department for 27 years and was a Senior Instructor at FLETC in Brunswick, Georgia. Mr. King was a former member of Lee Memorial AME Church in Cleveland, Ohio and was an avid sports fan especially the Cleveland Browns as well as all other Cleveland sports teams and enjoyed his newly discovered hobby of fishing. A resident of Glynn County Georgia since 2006, Mr. King was a program coordinator with FLETC and was very involved in the community teaching students at elementary, middle and high schools about social media. He also traveled abroad extensively teaching and training others. He was named as Instructor of The Year in 2016 at FLETC and was recognized on the Senate Floor for his achievement. He had also received numerous awards from his tenure with the Cleveland Police Department including the Distinguished Medal of Service.King served for 10 years as a senior instructor in the Financial Fraud and Investigative Analysis Branch, Investigative Operations Division. He was the program coordinator for the Case Organization and Presentation Training Program, the Internet Investigations Training Program and the assistant program coordinator for the Intelligence Analyst Training Program.

During his career, King provided numerous professional presentations at the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference, the High Tech Crime Investigators Association Conference, and the Crimes Against Children Conference. He also provided technical support for prior students and Partner Organizations. King’s influence expands the globe as students stationed throughout the United States attended his training, and he also instructed his programs in the International Law Enforcement Academy in Bangkok, Thailand. In an effort to share his vast knowledge and experience with an even wider audience, he authored an article for the FLETC Journal.

In January 2016, King was selected as the recipient of FLETC’s Instructor of the Year Award. This award is presented to the instructor who has demonstrated extraordinary innovation, productivity, and/or creativity in the delivery of FLETC’s mission. In the nomination package, it was noted: Mr. King is the instructor that everyone strives to be like. His professionalism is unparalleled and his energy is contagious. His ability to convey tedious and complicated material in an easily understood manner is phenomenal. Mr. King is always willing to implement new ideas and approaches.

On April 28, 2016, King was recognized by Senator Tom Carper (D-DE), Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, when Senator Carper made a floor speech highlighting his accomplishments as a FLETC employee.

Because of King’s reputation and exceptional performance, he was frequently sought out by staff members throughout FLETC and the local community to make a variety of presentations. He delivered training to the Homeland Security Leadership Academy, the Drug Enforcement Administration Management Group, and the Association of Government Accountants, Coastal Georgia Chapter. King also provided an internet safety course for Glynn Middle School and for parent’s night at C.B. Greer Elementary School, and he conducted a mock interview lab for Glynn Middle School.

King’s conduct, both inside and outside the professional environment, set the example for others to follow. He was a true professional, an extraordinary gifted and passionate instructor, and someone who truly believed in giving back to the community.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son Gregory King, Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Shelly S. King of Brunswick, children Leala King, Rayshawn Rogers, and Shayla Rose King all of Cleveland, OH, a grandson, Aiden Jerome Flananan, as well as several other grandchildren, a sister, Jaquella Heard and husband Rufus of Cleveland Heights, OH, two brothers, Arthur C. King II of North Olmstead, OH, and Francione King of San Diego, CA, several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews as well as a host of other family members.
