Major George Francis Metz, retired U.S. Marine Corps, was born on March 22, 1946 in Kansas City, KS to Mr. George H. Metz and Mrs. Martha Wiggins Metz. George loved being from Kansas and playing football at Bishop Ward High School and St. Mary of the Plains College. His devotion to the U.S. Marine Corps started when he was commissioned on December 12, 1969 to proudly serve in Vietnam. Throughout his illustrious 21 years of service, George was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal, and Vietnamese Campaign Medal. After the war, George became a reservist, married Ingrid Lourenco, and moved to Brunswick, GA to be a driving instructor at FLETC. After his retirement from the Marines, George remained incredibly active by connecting with and guiding young women and men through ROTC and basic training at Parris Island; being a driving force in the Brunswick Marine Corps League; and passionately leading the Brunswick Toys for Tots charity events for over 30 years. George leaves behind his incredible son Brian Metz, cherished daughter, Danielle Metz, his beloved grandson, Noah Metz Stutz, his loving adopted family, the Charlestons, Ms. Shirley Felton, Ms. Carolyn Couey, along with co-workers from FLETC, many friends, and the devoted Marines he served with or met along the way.
The Major’s services will take place on June 23 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick, GA. The viewing will begin at 10am with the funeral services starting at 11am. The pallbearers will be Brian Metz, Todd Donovan, Chad Lowry, Jack Monbouquett, Joe Hannah, Joe McDowell, and Jeremy Anderson. His final resting place will be at Chapel Park.
