The Reverend Dr. George Franklin Bowers, 79, priest of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia and retired podiatrist, passed peacefully from this life in the early hours on Thursday, August 20, 2015, surrounded by the presence of his loving family with the support and prayers of countless friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 22, 2015 at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Darien, GA. Father Ted Clarkson will be officiating the services. The family will receive friends Friday, August 21, 2015 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick, GA.
Father Bowers was born on December 12, 1935 in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was the son of the late George David and Pearl Bowers. He grew up in Boston, MA, later moving to Thomasville, Georgia with his first wife Ann, where he began a practice and raised his family.
Father Bowers was preceded in death by his mother and father; a step-daughter, Lee; his granddaughter, Emily. He is the birth father of three, step-father of two, and grandfather/step-grandfather of six. George is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Pat; children, David, Helen “Mike”, and Beth; a step-son, Neil “Michelle”; granddaughters, Caley and Keegan; step-grandchildren, Brian, Wade, and Ashley.
A lifelong Episcopalian, George found a vocation to ordained ministry after his first retirement and became a resident of Darien following service as interim rector of St. Andrew’s and St. Cyprian’s Episcopal churches. A lifelong member of the Cursillo community, George engaged in a variety of ministries. His work with young people spanned decades. He will be remembered by friends and family for his sense of humor, as well as a deep love for Boston’s professional sports teams.
In lieu of flowers his family request memorial contributions to be made to the American Heart Association, marked for stroke research or to Saint Andrew’s or Saint Cyprian’s Episcopal churches in Darien.
