Gary Allen DeGeer, 72, of Brunswick, GA died on Friday, September 29, 2023 at Hospice of Golden Isles after an extended battle with Alzheimers. He was surrounded by close family at the time of passing. A visitation will be held at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 from 6 pm until 8 pm for family and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date and time.
Gary was born on March 11, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan to Mary Ann DeGeer and Chester DeGeer and raised lovingly by his stepfather, Allen McNeill, and his mother Mary Ann. Gary played football at Granby High School before having the distinction of graduating from Guantanamo Bay High School in Cuba. After high school, Gary joined the United States Air Force and served in Tucson, Arizona. After leaving the Air Force Gary received his R.N. certification from College of Coastal Georgia before working at Georgia Pacific where he worked as an electrician until his retirement after 38 years. Gary treasured his friends and shared many stories about the relationships he made over the years. Gary was quick to share a smile and will be most remembered for his warm nature, giving spirit and was always the ‘life of the party.’
Gary was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Ann and Allen McNeill. Survivors include his wife Beckie DeGeer of Brunswick, his daughter Rachel DeGeer Bailey and husband Chad of St. Simons Island, his son Derek DeGeer and his wife MaryGrace of Orlando, their mother Barbara Hawley of St. Simons Island and Kristie Cody and her husband Shane of Brunswick, as well as his stepsons Marshall Thompson and his wife Melissa of Brunswick and Blaine Thompson and wife Melissa of Las Vegas. He is further survived by his brother Randy DeGeer of Detroit, his sister Renea Copeland of Virginia Beach and his grandchildren Chad, Jr., Liza, and Henry Bailey, Reagan and Riley DeGeer, Gaven, Logun, and Sadie Thompson, Nicole Cronan and Chase Cody. The family would also like to recognize Katie Fitzgerald for her supportive role as Patient Advocate.
