Estelle Flowers Barnes, 94, of St. Simons Island, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014. The family will receive friends Monday, July 14 2014 from 5-7 pm at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Tuesday, July 15 2014 at 10 am at Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery.
Estelle was born January 11, 1920 in Morris, Georgia to the late Henry Thomas Flowers and Sheppie Estelle Turner. She was married 55 years to the late Maxwell L. Barnes of Shorterville, Alabama. As a resident of Brunswick since 1944, Estelle served as Comptroller for Glynco for 35 years before her retirement and was active in the community as a member of the Women’s Club and Garden Club. Her beautiful flower arrangements won numerous awards at local shows throughout the years. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick where she taught Sunday school for decades. Family and friends remember her boundless generosity, elegance, and humor. During her long and abundant life, Estelle helped many people through her intelligence and kindness. She was a faithful servant of God, a loving wife, a caring mother, and an exemplary career woman.
Survivors include her son, Maxwell L. Barnes, Jr. (Paula) of Milledgeville, GA; her daughter, Deborah Acklen (Richard) of Ocean Springs, MS; four grandchildren: Stephanie Conner (Pace), Jennifer Barnes-Schlanger (Mike), Richard Acklen, Jr., and Christine Vaughn (Brodie); and seven great-grandchildren.
