Upon graduation from high school in Ludowici, GA, she moved to St Simon’s Island, GA., where she became a successful beautician in training at Frances Greer’s Beauty Shop. She was so popular, she was gifted with the opportunity to continue her education in Atlanta, where she earned her beautician’s license. She then moved to St Simon’s Island where she continued her successful career at Greer’s. In 1947, she met James Lanier Attaway and they married in October, 1950, at St Simon’s First Baptist Church. Elva and Jimmy were married for 59 years until his passing in 2009. Elva became a full-time housewife and mother. Along with her husband, they made their home in Brunswick, GA where they raised their two sons and one daughter.
Elva was very active in the community, serving as a Pink Lady at Glynn Brunswick Memorial Hospital and worked as the secretary to promote the Community Concert Series in Glynn County. She supported the many activities of her 3 children. She was a follower of Jesus Christ and was an active and devoted member of First Baptist Church, Brunswick, GA for over 50 years.
Elva will be remembered by her family and friends as a devoted Christian, wife, mother, sister, aunt, neighbor and friend. She had a beautiful, ready smile, pretty blue eyes and a great sense of humor. She was, also, an awesome baker and cook. She was well known for her perfect southern sweet tea and delicious pound cakes and desserts. She was, also, a huge fan of the Atlanta Braves baseball, the University of Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Southern Eagles football teams.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband, James Lanier Attaway; her parents, 3 sisters and 2 brothers.
She is survived by her son, Lyle L. (Debbie) Attaway; son, Craig S. (Lisa) Attaway; daughter, Glynis D. (Barclay) Wood; 6 grandchildren (4 grandsons – Robert, Stephen, Jonathan, Benjamin, 2 granddaughters – Emily, Lindsey) 1 great-grandson – Kaden, many nieces, great nieces, nephews, great-nephews, 2 brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law and other loving family members.
There will be a memorial graveside service at Brunswick Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Brunswick, GA, on July 22, 2023 at 11 am. Family and friends are invited to attend.
