Elizabeth “Betty” McGee Britt , 83, of Darien, went home to be with the Lord, family, and dearest friends just before sunrise on Feb. 8, 2024, at her home in Darien. She was able to see that sunrise with all of them.
Elizabeth “Betty” Ann McGee Britt, daughter of the late Garnett W. McGee and Reba Shockley McGee, was born on Aug. 6, 1941 in Wythe County, Virginia. She attended the public schools of Wythe County and graduated from Jackson Memorial High School 1959, National Business College, in Roanoke, Virginia, in 1962, and Lockheed Aircraft Vocational School in 1968.
She was married to her beloved James E. Britt Sr. on Oct. 18, 1969, in Orlando, Florida. She worked her longest profession as a homemaker, wife, Mama, GrammyMama, and Grammy. But she also accomplished mechanical drawing, visual aid typist and artist, illustrator, office manager, commercial fishing with the boats “Salazar” and “River Rat” and caretaker of family and friends.
Betty was a 63-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 97 Evansham Chapter of Wytheville, Sunday School superintendent and elder at First Presbyterian Church, in Darien, for numerous years, Girl Scouts of America Junior and Cadet leader, Boy Scouts of America Program Director, and Cub Scout leader and Cub Master for six years each. To everyone who knew her – she always had an open door.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved James E. Britt Sr.; sisters, Mrs. Clyde (Nick) W. (Garnita McGee) Nichols of Richmond Virginia, and Mrs. Steve (Sharon) Pugh of Austinville, Virginia.
Betty is survived by daughter, Angela E. Porter of Austinville; sons, Jesse M. Britt (Melissa Miller) of Darien and Robert C. Britt of Cox; and stepson, James E. Britt Jr. of Brunswick; grandchildren in age order, Kymbre Patton (Kyle Sullivan) of Darien, Jessica Britt of Brunswick, Jesse Britt II (Faith Stevenot Britt) of Harrogate, Tennessee, Katherine Britt of Brunswick, Marissa Maynard (Adam Maynard) of Brunswick, Matthew Miller (Dominique Carrasquillo) of Waynesville, Jonathan Miller Jr. (Racheal Lohsandt) of Hinesville and Sarah Ann Britt (Tony Edwards) of Columbus; great-grandchildren in age order, Jay Blackmore, Marqis Howell, Riley Hoy, Caiden Bender, Landon Maynard, Matthew Miller III, Ryleigh Edwards, Layton Maynard, Gage Miller, Jon Dean Sullivan, Sophie Maynard, Kalani Sullivan, Remington Miller and Jessi Britt; beloved nieces and nephew, Kimberly Nichols Lane of Richmond, Elaine Pugh Akers of Austinville and Eric Pugh of Austinville; and great-niece Jerrica Nichols (Ashley Nichols) of Bel Air, Maryland.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17 at St. Andrews Cemetery, with a celebration of life to follow. Pallbearers will be Kyle Sullivan, Jesse Britt II, Adam Maynard, Matthew Miller, Jonathan Miller and Tony Edwards.
The family would like to send out a special “thank you” to Hospice of the Golden Isles and all the family/friends who have furnished food and other special needs during our time of need.
