David was born in Macon, GA, to his mother Barbara Hays Hall, and his father the late Richard Anthony “Red” Whitten. He graduated from High School in Danville, Virginia, and then returned to Macon, GA, where he lived and worked for Hays Heating and Plumbing until 1985, when he moved his family to Woodbine, GA to work construction at Kings Bay Submarine Base, St. Mary’s, GA. In 1988, David was hired by Harry Pepper & Associates Construction of Jacksonville, Florida where he worked for 34 years until his retirement in 2022. His work took him to places like Clewiston, Key West, Naples, Lake Okeechobee, Arkansas and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
David is survived by his wife of 43 years, Kathryn Sue Darley Whitten, his daughters Kathryn Angela (Mike) Rivera , and Kimberly Jean (Ryan) Dehnert, and his 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Michael (Lynneth) Whitten and Rick (Sue) Whitten. David’s younger sister, Mary Angela, preceded him in death. David is also survived by many extended family members and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held February 15, 2025 at Crescent Baptist Church, Townsend, Georgia.
