Daniel Richard Krauss (Dick) of Brunswick, Georgia died on September 14, 2015 at the Hospice of the Golden Isles. A native of Brunswick, he was born on November 11, 1918 to Daniel A. and Eunice S. Krauss.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nan K. Riley of Macon, Georgia and Jean K. Grace of Brunswick.
Mr. Krauss graduated from Glynn Academy High School in 1936 and from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1940 with a degree in Business Management. At Tech, he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He was employed by General Motors Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia and returned to Brunswick at the commencement of World War II where he worked at the local shipyard until joining the United States Army Air Corps and reserves for six years, returning to Brunswick in 1946 when he became a loan officer at the Brunswick Federal Savings and Loan Association. He also became a director in the firm in 1958 and shortly thereafter entered into a partnership in a local real estate and insurance firm known as Shelander and Krauss, Incorporated.
In 1965, he was appointed district agent for the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles, retiring in 1983. Subsequently, he was involved in real estate renovation and construction in the Glynn County area. He was president of the Brunswick Jaycees, and a long- time member and director of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club where he was active in Christmas tree and Vidalia onion sales. He was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick where he served as a deacon and elder and held the title of elder emeritus. He also served as church treasurer, Sunday school teacher and clerk of the session. Additionally, he was a volunteer for the Habitat for Humanity, Manna House and Seafarer’s house.
Mr. Krauss is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lynn H. Krauss; and two children, D. Richard Krauss, Jr. of Decatur, Georgia and St Simons Island and Terri Krauss Flexer (Bruce) of Saint Simons Island. He has two grandchildren, Jay Flexer (Caroline) of Saint Simons Island and Lindsey Flexer Christian (Frank) of Covington, Georgia; one great grandson, Hudson Edward Christian; and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 17th at 10 A.M. at Brunswick Memorial Park. A celebration of Dick’s life will follow at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Brunswick with the Reverend John Law officiating. Visitation and a reception will follow in the church social hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dick’s memory to the First Presbyterian Church of Brunswick or to the Hospice of the Golden Isles. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral home is handling the arrangements.
