He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 5, 1940.
Dan graduated from Malden Catholic High School and received a B.S in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the University of Minnesota.
He was married to Clarinda Ellen Johnson on December 31, 1960.
Above all, Dan was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was the grandson of Irish immigrants and believed that family was most important; he instilled in his children a love and commitment for family. Together with his wife Clarinda (Kinnie), he raised seven children to always do their best and to do for others.
Dan had a long and distinguished career in Civil Engineering for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, where he served as Assistant Director of the Division of Water and Assistant Commissioner for Regional Affairs. Dan also served as the Department’s Director of Training and Development and, in that capacity, managed New York’s extensive operator training and certification programs. He developed and instituted New York’s in-plant technical assistance program, putting into practice the belief that top-quality operators can best teach others the skills necessary to operate and maintain plant operations. Included in the awards he has received are ABC’s Harris F. Seidel Certification Award for leadership in the advancement of skills of operating personnel, NETA’s Environmental Education Award for lasting and significant contributions to the environmental profession, and the Milton T. Hill Award of the New York Water Pollution Control Association for outstanding contributions to the advancement of water pollution control personnel.
Dan loved football and played in high school and college. He coached Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute football from 1963 to 1969 and the Albany Metro Maller semi-pro football team. He enjoyed coaching his children’s sports teams – from Troy Youth Hockey to Classie Lassie softball. Dan’s other passions included painting, woodcarving, sailing, the Boston Red Sox, and the New England Patriots.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years; children Karen Campbell, Christopher Campbell (Susan), Brian Campbell (Christine), Kathleen Knuth (Albert), Scott Campbell (Christine), Kelly Matus (Robert), and Mary Erin Campbell; grandchildren Ryan, Colin, Emily, Carlon, Pat, Matty, Jonny, Kendall, Callie, Annika, Katherine, Grace, Michael, Ben, Kyle, Brooke, Julia, and Jack; and his brother William Campbell of Sarasota, Florida.
A Celebration of Life will be held July 12 at 1 pm at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 57 Highland Avenue, Chatham, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan’s honor to The Disabled American Veterans and St. Jude Research Hospital.
