Charles S. Poppell, 73, of Cox, departed this life, Monday, July 11, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family. Graveside services will be held at 4PM Saturday, July 16, 2016 in Gardner – Poppell Cemetery with Military Honors. The Rev. David Riddle and Buddy Middleton will officiate. Randy Poppell, David Poppell, Chase Poppell, Sean Poppell, Kelly Lamb, Robert Millett, Scott Speed, and Chris Speed will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Morris, Chuck Lance, Mickey Ryals, Jessie Shiggs, and George Moxley.
Born April 16, 1943 in Wayne County, Georgia to the late Eugene W. and Johnnie Louise M Poppell, he was a lifelong resident of Cox and graduate of Darien High School Class of 1962. Mr. Poppell served his country in Vietnam and retried as SMSGT from the USAF after 33 years of service. He attended Townsend Baptist Church and enjoyed farming, woodworking and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Poppell and Clyde Patrick Poppell and a sister in law Ann Poppell.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandy Poppell of Cox, two sons, Steven Eugene Poppell and wife Kaley of Jesup, and Craig Travis Poppell and wife Jammie of Brunswick, five grandchildren, Hannah Poppell, Chase Poppell, Mary Catherine Stepherson, Bella Stepherson , and Luke Stepherson, a sister, Gloria Thompson and husband Robert of Shellman Bluff, two brothers, Larry Poppell and wife Sue of Longview, TX, and John Poppell of Darien, a sister in law, Daphne Poppell of Darien, a special niece, Callie Lamb of Cox, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday evening July 15, 2016 from 6PM until 8 PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of The Golden Isles. www.edomillerandsons.com
