Cathy Comer Dowdy, 62, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2025, in Brunswick, Georgia. Born on August 14, 1962, in Atlanta, Georgia, Cathy lived a life filled with love, purpose, and unwavering dedication to her family and community.
Raised in Georgia, Cathy graduated from Brunswick High School before pursuing her passion for education at Georgia Southern University. There, she earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education—a field that would become both her profession and her calling. Over the course of a remarkable 30-year teaching career, Cathy touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. Her classroom was more than a place of learning; it was a space where children felt seen, supported, and inspired.
Cathy’s love for children extended far beyond the school walls. She found immense joy in babysitting and spending time with her grandchildren. Whether she was reading stories or simply sharing laughter with little ones, Cathy’s nurturing spirit shone brightly.
She also cherished time spent on the water boating with loved ones and found peace and energy through exercise—especially at the gym, which she fondly referred to as her happy place. A natural hostess and vibrant presence in any room, Cathy delighted in entertaining friends and family. Her social gatherings were filled with warmth and laughter, reflecting her generous heart and joyful nature.
Cathy is survived by her devoted husband, Mike Dowdy; two beloved daughters: Christina Melton (Andrew) and Nicole Dowdy; cherished grandchildren Brooks and Collins Melton; and her brother Emri Comer III (Jana). She also leaves behind several cousins, nieces, nephews, and other special family members who held a dear place in her heart.
In addition to her immediate family, Cathy embraced many "adopted" loved ones as if they were kin. Among them are Kelly, Brian, Cooper, Walter, and Jack Harman; Kali and Jeremiah Johnson; Scott, Teresa, McKenzie, and Bryson Kelly; Melissa Minix—each of whom brought joy to Cathy’s life and shared deeply in hers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Emri Comer Jr. and Madge Comer.
Cathy’s legacy is one of compassion, connection, and commitment—to education, to family (both born and chosen), and to living life fully. Her impact will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
