Mrs. Holmes was born in Statesboro, Georgia on March 31, 1932 the daughter of the late Lloyd Austin and Arlene Zetterower Brannen Sr. She was a graduate of Statesboro High School. She received her B.S. in Education from Georgia Teachers College which was later named Georgia Southern University. Mrs. Holmes taught English at Camden County High School before meeting her soul mate Stephen. Within a short time they were joined together in holy matrimony and began their life together. She left her education career to become a devoted wife and mother to their five children. She was a resident of Brunswick most of her adult life. Mrs. Holmes was a member of College Place United Methodist Church and a member of the Co-ed Sunday School Class. She was also a dedicated member of the Lamplighters Sub Group of the United Methodist Women (UMW).
Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd Austin and Arlene Zetterower Brannen Sr.; her husband, Stephen A. Holmes; a son John B. Holmes; one brother, Lloyd A, Brannen Jr. She is survived by her two daughters Doris Jones (Rick) and Beth Cain (Andy) both of Brunswick, GA; two sons, David Holmes of Tybee Island, GA and Thomas Reid Holmes of Brunswick, GA; four wonderful grandchildren, Chris Jones of Savannah, GA, Shanna Giles (Robert) of Brunswick, GA, Stephen Cain of Brunswick, and Sarah Crosby (Stephen) of Valdosta, GA; and two precious great- grandchildren, Candice Cain and Drew Giles both of Brunswick, GA; one sister, Jo Chester (Larry) of Statesboro, GA, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Holmes was a dedicated soap opera fan and enjoyed collecting memorabilia from her favorite shows. She enjoyed reading, watching tv/movies, and writing cards/letters to her friends and family. She loved to travel and enjoyed traveling with her husband after his retirement. One of her most cherished accomplishments was spending eight years coordinating the monthly trips for the Happy Travelers Senior Adult Group from her church.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Marsha Certain and Hospice of the Golden Isles for their wonderful care of our mother. We would also like to thank LeeAnn Dadin for her 20+ years of loving care and friendship as she kept mother beautiful at her weekly beauty appointments.
The family cordially invites you to the visitation on Friday evening during the hours of 5:30 – 6:30 PM at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at College Place United Methodist Church. Pastor Rob Grotheer will officiate the service.
Honorary Pallbearers serving during the service will be members of the College Place United Methodist Co-ed Sunday School Class and members of the Lamplighters Sub-group.
In lieu of the customary honorariums, memorial contributions may be made to the College Place United Methodist Church UMW, 3890 Altama Avenue, Brunswick, Georgia 31520 or Hospice of The Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Pkwy, Brunswick, Georgia 31525.
