Mrs. McCollum was born September 11, 1933 in Savannah, Georgia the daughter of the late Joseph Hoke Kennedy and the late Kathleen Herring Kennedy. She has been a lifelong resident of Brunswick, Georgia and was a 1951 graduate from Glynn Academy. She is the wife of Charles L. McCollum. Mrs. McCollum was previously married to the late Joseph Willard White. She was a retired bookkeeper at Sun Trust Bank. She was a member of College Place United Methodist Church. Mrs. McCollum was a member of the Church Council, Co-Ed Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women’s Bible Study Groups, and the Neighborhood Gatherings. She was also an active member in the Red Hat Society, Ramblin Roses, and worked with the Vacation Bible School.
Mrs. McCollum was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Hoke Kennedy and Kathleen Herring Kennedy; her late husband, Joseph Willard White; a grandson, Brian McCollum; a special aunt, Ethel Herring Strickland. She is survived by her husband, Charles L. McCollum; one son, Joe White (Megan); a daughter, Judy Harper (Tim), two step-sons, John McCollum and Hans McCollum (Jody); one brother, Jerry Kennedy (Mary). Mrs. McCollum was blessed to have eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren that survive. Her beloved best friend, Virginia Lipthratt survives. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. McCollum loved to spend time with and entertain her family and friends. She enjoyed displaying her culinary skills when entertaining her guest. She also enjoyed traveling and was an avid reader. She was a supporter of community service and often volunteered her time with Faith Works, the Manna House, and the Salvation Army. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her family will cherish many fond memories for years to come.
The family will receive friends during the hours of 10:00-11:00 AM Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at College Place United Methodist Church. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at College Place United Methodist Church. Reverend Rob Grotheer and Reverend Ray Thomas will officiate the service. The burial will follow the service in Chapel Park Cemetery.
Jerry Strickland and Dennis Strickland will serve as active pallbearers during the service.
