Carlton Alexander Morrison

Carlton Alexander Morrison, 94, of St. Simons Island, Georgia passed away September 22, 2021 while under care at the Hospice of the Golden Isles in Brunswick, Georgia. Mr. Morrison was born October 23, 1926 in Hazlehurst Georgia to the late Reverend Columbus Alexander Morrison and the late Bessie Andrews Morrison. He was the third of five sons born in the Morrison family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers Dwight, Wilbur and Comer and his son James Michael Morrison. Mr. Morrison is survived by his brother Wesley, his loving wife of sixth-eight years, Beth, his son Carl (Patsy), his daughter Pam and his grandson Tommy. Cherishing his memory are his former son-in-law Bubba Timbes, and numerous relatives and friends.

Carlton Morrison was a World War II veteran having enlisted and enrolled in the aviation cadet training program. Following the war, he attended North Georgia College and Emory University, graduating in 1948 with a degree in journalism. He worked for the Atlanta Constitution and WSB radio in Atlanta where he was tasked with interviewing visiting dignitaries. His most memorable interview was with former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. He met his future wife Beth while on a reporting assignment. They were married in 1953 in Blakely, Georgia by Reverend Morrison.

Mr. Morrison relocated to Brunswick in 1960 and worked for WMOG radio in news coverage and advertising sales. Later, he worked as a local aide to Congressman Russell Tutten. In 1968 the family moved to Athens, Georgia where both parents attended and earned advance degrees from the University of Georgia. Upon his return to Brunswick, Mr. Morrison began teaching at then Brunswick Junior College as an instructor of history. After teaching for nine years, he established a business which offered marketing and political consulting. Later, he worked for a multi-state health care service. In the 1980’s he became the owner of The Salt Marsh Press, a micro-publisher for area writers. He authored two books, one of which described timber rafting on the Altamaha River. He gave lectures and signed his book “Running The River” until his health declined.

Carlton Morrison was a past president of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club where he enjoyed working the onion and Christmas tree sales. He was a volunteer at Manna House offering meals to the needy. Carlton and Beth are charter members of College Place United Methodist Church.

A Celebration of Life will be held at College Place United Methodist Church, 3890 Altama Ave, Brunswick, Georgia 31520 on Saturday October 2, 2021 at 11 AM with the Reverend Rob Grotheer officiating and the Reverend Sam Vernon assisting. Visitation will be at 10 AM in the church fellowship hall.
