Mr. Smith was the son of Donnie Isadora O’Quinn Smith and Henry Smith and was born in Folkston, Ga., in 1924 moving to Brunswick in 1930.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as 7 brothers; Pohmlee, R. V. , Glynn, Carnell, Harrell, Albert, and Edward Smith, two sisters, Winnell Novak and Geraldine Smith, and a granddaughter, Katherine Lynn Mahoney and a grandson, Stephen Boyd Waddell, and two loving wives, Jewell Bowers Hunter and Thelma “Terry" Smith.
In his younger years, he shrimped the waters of coastal Ga. Among his many careers he was a painter. a projectionist at the Starlight Drive Inn Theater, and a manger at the Deer Tongue Market in downtown Brunswick. He retired from Hercules in 1978 after 20 years of service.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as an amphibious engineer with tours in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea, receiving a Philippine Liberation Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal and two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the American Legion in Glynn County.
Calvin was known by many for his special sense of humor and his generous annual October parties where family and friends gathered for low country boil, oysters, and entertainment provided by the Haz Benz.
As a Rhythm Guitarist, he performed with the Holsum Flavored Randers, The Dixie Playboys as well as The Haz Benz. In addition to playing his guitar, he also enjoyed fishing and talking on the CB radio under his well known handle “The Born Loser”. He also enjoyed looking for Hidden Treasures on his many “rounds” at the Local thrift shores.
Survivors are his ten children, Susan Mahoney (Jack) of Manomet, MA., Dianne Cooke (Lennie) of Colliers, WV, Carol Pruitt (Mark) of Jacksonville, FL., Sherry Auten (Truett) of Brunswick, Gina Knox of Augusta, GA, Tina Smith of Nahunta, GA, Wanda Keen of Nahunta, Ga., Pam Arnett (Wayne) of Jesup, GA, Michael Calvin Smith of Brunswick and Kenneth F. Smith (Angela) of Inman, SC, one brother, Franklin Smith of Brunswick a sister, Cleo Usher of Brunswick, grandchildren, Rhonda Cooke, Timothy Cooke, Kelly Murray, Susan Raulerson, Cathy Mullins-Menard, Sarah Pruitt, Jonathan Burnem, Dustin Burnem, Bryan Tucker, Jennifer Beckham, Kris Perkins, Kassondra La Roche, Amanda Keen, Chris Keen, Brittany Keen, Joey Arnett, Stacy Arnett, Kenneth Smith, Jr., Dylan Smith and Calvin Lee Smith., great grandchildren, Dillon Cooke, Tyler Menard, Dustin Menard, Summer Mullins Keen, Alyssa Mullins, Samantha Raulerson, Kaitlyn Raulerson, Aubrey Burnem, Autumn Hales, Darrin Rowe, Michael Beckham, Nicholas Beckham, Kaytlin Tucker, Clayton Kuhns, Daniel Tucker, and Abigail Pfiefer, Jacob Tucker, Brody Tucker, Brittany Tolbert, Austin Moore, Kaylynn Smith, Kristian Perkins , Gracie Keen, Emily Chandler, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday 12/22/10 from the Chapel of the Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Harvey officiating. Interment will follow in Brunswick Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Honors.
Active pallbearers will be Grandsons, Timmy Cooke, Jonathan and Dustin Burnem, Kristopher Perkins, Bryan Tucker, Chris Keen, Joey Arnett and great grandson, Dillon Cooke. Honorary pallbearers will be: The American Legion, Dr David Sudduth, Dr Michael Butler, Dr Martinez, Dr. Lanzone, and Heartland Hospice with thanks to our special angel Kristina Clark.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Pine Ridge Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends in the Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday 12/21/10. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, Brunswick, Ga.
