Betty was the daughter of Beatrice Powell Ramsey and Le Roy Ramsey of Brunswick. Her only sister, Diane Ramsey, preceded her in death in 2016.
She graduated from Glynn Academy in 1946, and as soon as a position opened up in 1949, she joined the Army to serve as a WAC (Women's Army Corps). Her tours of duty included Germany, France and Japan as well as various posts in the United States.
In all, she traveled to 13 different countries during her career. Among her many service awards were: United Nations Service Medal; Korean Service Medal; Occupation Medal - Japan; National Defense Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; and six Good Conduct Awards.
In 1969, Betty retired from the Army with the rank of Sergeant First Class to her hometown of Brunswick. Then, for 20 years she worked for Western Auto. She was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church of Brunswick.
Betty never married. Instead, she was the always attentive, fun-loving aunt to several generations of her extended family's children. Children were always drawn to her good nature and generous spirit as she always had time, a hug and a little gift for them.
No one ever enjoyed Christmas more than Betty. Her home during the holidays was ablaze with colorful decorations both inside and out. Christmas was also an opportunity for friends, family and neighbors to view her extensive collection of handmade nutcrackers and other figurines.
Survivors include her six first cousins: Marsha Bailey of Atlanta; Bill Bailey of Macon, Georgia; Barbara Powell Goodnight of Hoschton Georgia; Judy Baldwin Benjamin of St. Simons Island; Bill Baldwin of Florida; Faye Powell of Portland, Oregon; and second cousin Jack Powell III of Brunswick.
A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 11:00AM in Palmetto Cemetery. The First Methodist Church of Brunswick and Hospice of the Golden Isles are suggested organizations for anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in Betty's name.
