Born August 22, 1933 to Frederic John Hobscheid Sr. and Esther Steck Hobscheid in Chicago, Illinois, Barbara was a graduate of Hirsch High School at age 16. Upon graduation she attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, studying Home Economics. Barbara returned to Chicago, Il to marry and raise a family. Barbara loved being a homemaker and mother to her 4 children. She was an excellent seamstress, milliner and gardener. She was an active member of the church, participated in the choir and taught Sunday School. She pursued her degree in Humanities at Elmhurst College while working as a secretary and raising her family. A love of jazz music, dancing and a new life change then resulted in her moving to Cincinnati, OH. Barbara focused on her career at University of Cincinnati as an Audio Visual Technician, where she also attended classes. This began an interest in fiction writing as well as pursuing her love of Jazz Music, and ballroom dancing. Widowed at this point, she was active in the CSL Church of Cincinnati. A lifelong animal lover, she also became involved in fostering and rescuing dogs and cats that were abandoned. A church trip brought Barbara to Brunswick, GA where she met James Higgins and the rest, as they say, is history. Barbara and James married Nov 23, 1990 and really did live happily after.
Barbara spent her time in Brunswick as an administrator at FLETC where she retired after 17 years. A very active member of Blythe Island Methodist Church she taught Sunday School, and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Her love for animals, and rescuing abandoned animals continued while living in Brunswick. Veterinarians and neighbors in the area often sent her animals to foster, many of whom got adopted by Barbara and Cap’n Diddley.
Barbara’s family, now grown to include 2 sons in law, and 4 grandchildren, and stepsons and step-grandchildren all loved to visit and take advantage of holidays and celebrations with “Papa” and Barbara’s feasts!
