Barbara was born March 3, 1931 in Perry, GA to Joseph Meade and Georgelle Smith Tolleson. She attended Ward Belmont College for girls in Nashville, TN. In 1989 she settled on St. Simons Island, where her colorful personality left her mark on all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Joyce T. Brown, and two brothers, J. M. Tolleson, Jr. and Mel S. Tolleson.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Ann White of St. Simons, her son, W. Carter Bates, III (Thayer) of Macon, four grandchildren, Hunter White, Mallory Koegler , Cissy and Kenson Bates; her brother, T. R. (Buck) Tolleson, Sr. of Perry, GA, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Mel S. (Sandra) Tolleson of Macon, along with eight nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 Saturday in the Chapel of the Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home with Rev. David Yarborough officiating. A family graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Jim Shipley on Sunday at 2:00 at Evergreen Cemetery in Perry, GA.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Thornwell Home for Children, 302 South Broad St., Clinton, SC, 29325.
The family would like to express special thanks to Home Instead Care and Hospice of the Golden Isles for the care given her during her brief illness.
