Mrs. North was born in Brunswick, GA and lived locally her entire life. Her historic knowledge of the area and its people was extensive. At the age of 18, she worked as a secretary for Albert Crews who was the contractor for the J. A. Jones Company in Brunswick where 99 ships were built for the war effort between 1943 and 1945.
She loved to share stories of WWII, and met her husband Louis O. North of Milwaukee, WI at a USO dance in Hinesville, where he was stationed prior to shipping out to England.
She was known as the “jitterbug queen” amongst her friends and attended many military dances chaperoned by her mother Josephine Torras Harwell, also a Brunswick native.
Mrs. North graduated from Glynn Academy in 1943. Over 22 local businesses were fortunate to have her as a trusted and sharp employee as she worked from age 18-85.
She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick and enjoyed being part of the Emmaus Community.
For many years she and her husband were very active with the St. Simons Surf Sailors which they helped found, and enjoyed bowling in various leagues in Brunswick.
An avid bridge player, she was a member of two bridge clubs and a substitute for others.
Her three children were blessed to have a mother who was nurturing and made life FUN! Their childhood involved many community and school activities as she always encouraged them to pursue their goals.
She is survived by her three children Dr. Robert L. North, Sr. and Jerry T. North of Brunswick and Anita N. Sholtes of Port Orange, FL.
She left behind four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A Memorial Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th at 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, 1400 Norwich St.
A visitation reception will follow the service at the church. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Anne’s life.
