Stephen R Schultz

Stephen Roy Schultz, 69, passed away in Brownsville, Texas on December 21st, 2020, rehabilitating from an exhaustive two week stay in an ICU. The battle for life was lost to complications of pneumonia. His last month at home with family was among the happiest of his life. His heart overflowed with joy and delight, and appreciation of all the seemingly mundane aspects of life in a way which touched all those who were able to experience him during his final days.

Preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Liz Schultz, Steve is survived by his loving wife, Diane, his sons Coenen and Graham, Daughter in law Dolly, grandchildren Clara and Mateo. Sister Marilyn, brother in law David. Steve will be missed by many, including Diane’s siblings Cheryl, Johnny, Sara, Nancy, and their spouses, children, and countless others whose lives were touched by the glowing presence of Mr. Schultz.

A lifelong ‘09er, Steve attended schools in the Alamo Heights from day one of school, until graduating AHHS in 1969. He earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Trinity University, graduating class of 1973, and a subsequent teaching certificate.

He then devoted himself, with his love and appreciation for science and education, to teaching at the middle school level within the SAISD district. His unflappable nature and true dedication were fundamental to his twenty-seven year career, first at Connell middle school, then eventually at Horace Mann middle school, the campus from which he would eventually retire. But, not before becoming the head of the Science Department, the school’s golf coach, sponsor of the campus National Junior Honor Society, and a proud source of reliability, responsibility, and consistency for thousands of students on San Antonio’s West side. In retirement, Mr. Schultz was able to enjoy a summer job at Pecan Valley golf club, as well as tutoring several SAISD students.

Upon his wife Diane’s retirement, the two moved to Brownsville to be near their newborn granddaughter, Clara: their first grandchild. Clara would soon be joined by younger brother Mateo. The two grandchildren brought Steve much joy in a way only grandparents know. The two youngsters quickly adopted Steve’s childhood nickname for him. Cici. A name lovingly attached to Steve by his younger sister before she was able to pronounce his name correctly. A lovely bridge of generations. Cici loved playing with, and teaching his grandkids, and they, too loved spending time with him.

Immediate family will gather in Brownsville, at the residence of Stephen and Diane, to memorialize him on Sunday January 17th, 2021.
