Ricardo Portillo

Ricardo Portillo Ochoa, son of the late, Florentino Roque Portillo Peralta and Enedina Ochoa Campoy de Portillo was called to be reunited with the Lord on October 21, 2020 in Austin, Texas at the age of 76. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Carmen Portillo Vega, his children Ricardo (Denise), Carmen (Castulo), and Deborah, and his two precious granddaughters, Camilla Sofia and Sophia Isabella. Ricardo is also survived by his mother, Enedina Ochoa Campoy de Portillo, and his siblings: Maria Dolores Portillo Ochoa de Garrido, Andrea Leonor Portillo Ochoa, Antonio Portillo Ochoa and Ana Maria Portillo Ochoa. Ricardo was preceded in death by his brothers, Jesus “Chuy” Rodolfo Portillo Ochoa and Luis Arsenio Portillo Ochoa.

Ricardo was born on January 2, 1944 in Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico. He had 6 siblings. His father passed when Ricardo was a young boy. He and his family moved to Mexico City where Ricardo lived until the age of 30, when he took a temporary job transfer to Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, which resulted in a permanent move when he met the love of his life, Carmen Vega. Ricardo ultimately moved to Brownsville, Texas to form a life with Carmen. Together they established a jewelry retail business, Portillo Jewelry, and their finest legacy… their three children who were their true jewels.

Ricardo was best known for his epic smile, his compassionate soul, and his love of storytelling. He demonstrated genuine empathy to those he got to serve by way of his jewelry store, where “the customer is always right.” His jewelry store was his home and his customers were always treated like family. In fact, despite having a private office and breakroom, he preferred to eat his meals in the presence of his customers. He was gregarious by nature, and his store allowed him countless opportunities to engage in political debate, philosophical discussions, cultural enrichment, and joke-telling.

Over four decades he helped thousands of couples start their lives together by helping them choose the beautiful bands and jewels that symbolized their love. Like a gentle harbor master, he made sure that each couple was ready to sail and, not knowing how their journey might end, he sent them off with his blessings. Ricardo had a passion for his job; he loved being involved, albeit in a small way, in the greatest milestones (including Baptisms, Quinceañeras, Graduations, and Weddings) of the lives of many Brownsville residents. His legacy would repeat with the second and third generations of his most loyal customers. He treated all his customers equally, regardless of their financial means and he actively sought opportunities to give back to those less fortunate than he.

Together with his wife, Ricardo was extremely proud to have lived the American Dream, where he believed the opportunity for prosperity is equal for all, and only limited by one’s work ethic. He taught his children to be resourceful, and to persevere beyond any personal shortcomings or limitations. Although he was not formally educated, he was extremely well-read, cultured, and had an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. He was truly a self-educated, self-made man. He taught his children the importance of learning from every situation in life, good or bad. He taught them to be proud of their Mexican heritage and their surname, “Portillo.” He taught them the importance of education, and of pursuing one’s dream at all cost. He taught his children that there is a cost to get what you want in life. Any type of success demands something from you, and only you know what you’re willing to invest to get there. He taught his children the art and beauty of being content, and that money doesn’t buy happiness.

He worked his entire life to provide his children the best education possible. During their childhood, he generously offered his time to volunteer at his children’s schools. He was also a parishioner at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Ricardo also had a passion for music and art. He instilled an appreciation of the fine arts in each of his children and his grandchildren. His joyous spirit will always resonate in our hearts as we rejoice in music to some of his favorites (Bach, Mozart, Lady Gaga, Vicente Fernandez, Shakira, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Los Yaki, Piporro, Chelo Silva, Lupe Mejia “La Yaqui”, Claudine Longet, Opera, etc.) to honor his memory.

We pray for Ricardo’s soul as he enters the Kingdom of Heaven, “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sin.” Colossians 1:13-14.

Funeral services for Mr. Portillo are being handled by Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista. Visitation will begin on Wednesday October 28, 2020 at 6:00 PM with a rosary at 7:00 PM at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista located at 125 McDavitt Blvd Brownsville, TX 78521. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Thursday October 29, 2020 at 10:30 AM with burial to follow.

También le sobreviven a Ricardo su mama, de 99 años, la señora Enedina Ochoa Campoy Viuda de Portillo, sus hermanos: Maria Dolores Portillo Ochoa Viuda de Garrido, Andrea Leonor Portillo Ochoa, Antonio Portillo Ochoa y Ana María Portillo Ochoa. Se anticiparon a la muerte de Ricardo sus hermanos Jesus “Chuy” Rodolfo Portillo Ochoa y Luis Arsenio Portillo Ochoa.

Ricardo nació el 2 de Enero de 1944 en Navojoa, Sonora, México. El tenía 6 hermanos. Su padre falleció cuando Ricardo era muy pequeño. El y su familia se mudaron a la ciudad de México en donde Ricardo vivió hasta los 30 años de edad, hasta que tomó un trabajo temporal y se mudó a Matamoros Tamaulipas, México, en donde conoció al amor de su vida, Carmen Vega. Finalmente, Ricardo se mudó a la ciudad de Brownsville, Texas para formar una vida con ella. Juntos establecieron un negocio de tiendas de joyería, y su legado…. sus tres hijos quienes fueron sus verdaderas joyas.

Ricardo fue mejor conocido por su sonrisa épica, su alma compasiva y por que le encantaba contar historias. El demostraba una genuina empatía con aquellos que llegó a servir a través de su joyería, donde “el cliente siempre tiene la razón”. Su joyería fue su hogar y sus clients siempre fueron tratados como familia. De hecho, a pesar de tener una oficina privada y un cuarto para descanso, el prefería comer en la presencia de sus clientes. El era sociable por naturaleza, y su tienda le permitía innumerables oportunidades para participar en debates politicos, discusiones filosóficas, enriquecimiento cultural, y para contar chistes.

Durante cuatro décadas el ayudó a miles de parejas a comenzar su vida juntos ayudándolas a escoger hermosas bandas de matrimonio y joyería que simbolizara su amor. Como un amable capitán de Puerto, se aseguraba de que cada pareja estuviera lista para zarpar y, sin saber como terminaría su viaje, los despedía bendiciéndolos. Ricardo tenía pasión por su trabajo; le encantaba estar involucrado, aunque de una manera muy pequeña, en los acontecimientos más importantes de la vida de muchos de los residentes de Brownsville, como Bautisos, Quinceañeras, Graduaciones y Bodas. La historia se repetería con la segunda y tercera generación de sus clientes más fieles. Ricardo era conocido por su generosidad. El trataba a todos sus clientes por igual, independientemente de su situación económica.

Junto con su esposa, Ricardo estaba extremadamente orgulloso de haber vivido el sueño americano, donde la oportunidad de prosperar es igual para todos, y solo la limita la ética de trabajo de cada uno. Aunque era culto, y tenía una sed insaciable de conocimiento, el no tuvo una educación formal. El realmente fue autodidacta, un hombre que se formó así solo. Como padre, les enseño a sus hijos la importancia de aprender de cada situación de sus vidas, fueran buenas o malas. El les enseño a estar orgullosos de sus raices mexicanas y de su apellido “Portillo”. El les enseño la importancia de la educación y de perseguir sus sueños a toda costa. El les enseño a sus hijos que hay un costo por tener lo que se quiere en la vida. Que cualquier tipo de éxito exige algo de uno mismo, y solo cada quien sabes cuanto estas dispuesto a invertir para lograrlo. El les enseño a sus hijos el arte y la belleza de estar contentos, y que el dinero no compra la felicidad.

El trabajó su vida entera para darle a sus hijos la mejor eduación posible. Durante la infancia de sus hijos, el ofrecía generosamente su tiempo como voluntario en la escuela de ellos. El también fue feligrese en la Basílica de la Caterdral de la Inmaculada Concepción. Ricardo también tenía pasión por la música y el arte. El inculcó el aprecio por las bellas artes en cada uno de sus hijos y de sus nietas.

Su espiritu siempre resonará en nuestros corazones, y nos regocijaremos con la música de sus favoritos (Bach, Mozart, Lady Gaga, Vicente Fernandez, Shakira, Creedence, Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Los Yaki, El Piporro, Chelo Silva, Lupe Mejia “La Yaqui”, Claudine Longet, Opera, etc) para honrar su memoria.

Oramos porque el alma de Ricardo entre en el Reino de los Cielos. “El nos ha librado del demonio de las tinieblas y nos ha trasladado al reino de su Hijo amado, en el que resucitaremos…” Colosenses 1:13-14

El servicio funerario del señor Portillo será realizado por la Funería del Angel Buena Vista. Las visitas comenzarán el miercoles 28 de octubre del 2020 a las 6:00 pm con un rosario a las 7:00 pm en la Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista con dirección en Boulverd McDavitt 125, Brownsville, TX 78521. La misa de resurección será celebrada en la Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción el Jueves 29 de Octubre del 2020, a las 10:30 am y seguirá el entierro.
