Martha De La Garza, 73, resident of Brownsville, TX, beloved wife of Sergio De La Garza who preceded her in death, loving mother of Martha (John) McKinney, Margarita (Scott) Povish, Maria DeLourdes (Don) Cabadas-Ferguson, Rafael Loera, Celeste (Ryan) Santa Ana, Maruzzella De La Garza, and Samuel (Laurie) De La Garza. Dearest grandmother of Nicole and Natalie McKinney, Scott and Brian Povish, Genevieve Cabadas, Amelianna and Santos De La Garza, and Martha and James Santa Ana.
Martha was born in Tampico, Tamaulipas, MX on December 14, 1947. Her parents were Ana Maria Hevia and Carlos Noriega. She enjoyed a long and successful career as a cosmetologist in Detroit, MI and later in Brownsville, TX. Martha also worked as a popular radio DJ personality on WIID's Serenata de mi Barrio alongside her husband. It was through their mutual love of music that they met and later, resulted in a beautiful 38 year marriage.
Family was at the center of Martha's world. In her early years, Martha worked tirelessly to overcome enormous challenges to provide for, and protect those she loved. This deep love and devotion to her children, grandchildren, and spouse continued throughout her life and never faltered. It will not be forgotten.
Martha was a devout Catholic and her deep faith was expressed through her unbreakable commitment to the Church and in her tireless service to her fellow man. A long-time parishioner of the Basilica of Ste. Anne de Detroit, and later St. Mary's Parish in Brownsville, TX, she devoted her time to serving our Lord as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and by visiting area nursing homes. Her faith defined her and until her last breath, served as an extraordinary example to all who knew her.
While she was called to the Lord's Kingdom sooner than we had hoped on May 25, 2021, we are confident that she is rejoicing in His heavenly presence accompanied by her loving spouse and best friend.
