Maria Alicia Loya (Mary Alice) was born on the 8th of October in 1956 in Brownville, Texas. Daughter of Francisco Trevino Sr. (preceded in death), and Armandina Trevino. Mary Alice attended and graduated from Villa Maria High School, where she made lifelong friends.
Mary Alice was a devoted daughter, wife, and mother. Both her and her family have been heavily involved in the community and shaping of what Brownville is today. Mary Alice was the first woman to hold the office of Sombrero Festival President in 1991, and was part of the team that founded the now legendary event. She spent 30 years on the Board of Directors following her presidency. Her family was involved with the
annual Sombrero Festival event, operating the funnel cake booth each year.
Mary Alice was also an active educator, going above and beyond for her students dedicating her time and energy to UIL events and community projects. Mary Alice was an advocate for the rights of educators and funding for schools. She served on the Association of Brownsville Educators (AOBE), and held the position as President. As an active community supporter, Mary Alice was also a member of Leadership Brownsville (1990-1991), and was involved in the Junior Brownsville Service League.
Mary Alice is survived by her husband Manuel Antonio Loya Jr., and sons Mario Antonio (Loraine), Alejandro David, and Lorenzo Rene Loya. Mother, Armandina Trevino, and siblings, Frank Jr., Rolando, and Maria Isabel (Coca) Trevino.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 18th from 2 to 9 pm with a Rosary being recited at 7 pm at Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista, 125 McDavitt Blvd. Brownsville, Texas. Church Service will commence on Friday, February 19th at 12:30 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church (1200 East Lincoln Street, Brownsville, Texas). Followed by the procession to Funeraria del Angel Buena Vista for the burial ceremony.
