John DeLacey Sevier, 81, passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 in Brownsville, Texas. He was born on April 29, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, and was the first son of John Sevier of New Haven, Connecticut and Edith Badeau of Rockville Centre, New York.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents, his son, Patrick Sevier, and his brother, Joseph H. Sevier.
He is survived by his wife, Olga Casas Sevier; his niece, Michelle Kyral (Danny) of Harlingen; his nephew, John Sevier (Rosy) of Brownsville; grand nephews and nieces, Danielle, Shane, Devin, Allison, Manuel, Erick, and John; stepsons, Christian Casas and Bryan Casas Leal; and two grandchildren, Brooke and Zachary Leal.
When John was just three years old, his father moved the family from New York to Mexico City. He played baseball, had lots of adventures with his younger brother Joe, and attended the School of the Americas.
After finishing high school, he attended Notre Dame University. He earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in economics. Then, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a captain in special forces in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal for heroism and the Army Commendation medal for exceptional meritorious service to his country.
Following his time in the army, John worked for the Chrysler Corporation in Mexico City where he was able to travel to Colombia and Argentina as part of his job. For several years after that, he had his own advertising company in which he mostly worked for Nike and Reebok.
John came to Brownsville in 2004, and worked at Mr. Music for a while integrating his marketing and research skills. He helped grow the business by making strong connections with area band and music directors.
He enjoyed playing tennis and was an avid reader. His favorite genre was history, and he could remember facts and figures like no one else. John also loved getting together with his brother, Joe, to play bridge, and they would team up against their bridge friends to win their weekly tournament games. They were a very strong team! John also worked with the Veterans Administration providing counseling and guidance to veterans in need of help. Most recently, he was fond of going to the library and checking out books.
John loved sports, and enjoyed watching football and baseball games. His favorite teams to watch were Notre Dame, the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants, and the Houston Astros. He and his brother Joe loved watching college football games together and sharing stories of when they were kids growing up in Mexico City.
John took pleasure in spending time with his “adopted” grandchildren, Brooke and Zachary. On “Pizza Night”, they would watch Disney movies and chow down on pizza together. This activity was something they ALL looked forward to.
