David Brian Hughes, age 63, passed away from lung cancer on June 29, 2024, in Brownsville, Texas. Born on July 3, 1960, at Perrine Air Force Base in Dennison, Texas. He was the oldest child and only son born to David E. Hughes and Mable L. Carnahan. David was known for his adventurous spirit, beautiful smile, and the ability to bring laughter to any room.
After relocating from Ohio to Florida, David attended Homestead Junior High School, where he discovered his musical talent through playing the trumpet. He later attended South Dade Senior High School and earned his GED. David briefly served in the United States Army, where he suffered a service-related injury during training and received an honorable discharge. After his military service, he pursued a career in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning trade, where he served his clients in South Florida.
David read the Bible cover to cover several times and continuously sought to deepen his understanding of his faith. His hobbies included tinkering on cars and anything that needed to be fixed, earning him the nickname "mechanical man." David also had a profound love for reading and a keen interest in science, which kept him engaged in lifelong learning.
David was predeceased by his father, David E. Hughes, in 2011, and his mother, Mable L. Stillion (Carnahan), in 2023. He is survived by his daughter, Katrina B. Hughes (Neal Killian); grandchildren, Billy L. Hughes and Michelle R. Hughes; sisters, Kay M. Hancock (Phil) and Julie S. Hollingsworth (Sean); half-brother, Chad E. Stillion (Celeste); nieces and nephews, Angela C. Hunt, Jason M. Hunt, Ryan A. Hancock, Kaitlyn R. Hancock, the late Whitney B. Magill, Kyle W. Magill, Cierra J. Rocheville, Austin Stillion, Kamerin Stillion, and many loving relatives.
David will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota, Florida. An interment of ashes ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 2:30 p.m., where family and friends can gather to pay their last respects.
