When I look back into my professional and personal life, I can only smile as I recall the beautiful moments I have share with John.  As a perfect dedicated employe and as a friend, we went threw good and rough time together and John always stayed positive. Even do we were not in touch theses past years, he will always remain in my best and precious souvenirs.

Bonjour, Chers Amis,

Permettez-nous de dire quelques mots sur notre cher ami John Hou-Cheong Chan. Nous connaissons John depuis une cinquantaine d'années. Nous commençons par son nom chinois et ses dossiers académiques:

  孝昌: 孝者 天之经 地之义也, 昌者 日之升 月之满也. 孝昌 的意思是 
  孝 順 和 昌盛 也.

Indeed Hou Cheong had been a filial son, excellent in character and learning, 品学兼优. He pursued knowledge vigorously and obtained the highest academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Physics in 1976 at McMaster University by innovative research in Optical Velocimeters (instruments for measuring the moving speed of particles and flow of fluid by laser light). Dr. John H. C. Chan made numerous original contributions to this domain and later applied his knowledge to build an automatic control system to improve the operation of the cement factory of Lafarge & Lavalin. In recent years John prospered through smart financial investments and management of funds with great success.

We offer our deepest sympathy to Jackie, Andrew, Alex, and their families, relatives, and friends. We can only say that human life is minisculely short compared with the age of the earth and universe, i.e.

  人生如朝露, 何处无离散, 今宵人惜別, 相會在雲間.

We hope you will turn sorrow into courage to celebrate John's life and achievements on earth.

Hou-Cheong was humble and courteous, with a broad heart, eager to seek knowledge and to show kindness. With a warm heart for Takming, he made donations to the Takming University of Science and Technology in Taiwan over the years to support students with financial difficulties.  Being consistent and caring, Hou-Cheong was indeed a role model for Takming people!

Quelques rencontres ont suffit pour apprendre à le connaître et surtout à l’apprécier. Un lien d’amitié c’est créer facilement. De l’avoir connu est un plaisir pour nous. Son départ laisse un grand vide pour tous ces proches.

John Chan & I
 I have known John since 1950, we met at Tak Ming Middle School where we became good friends. He was very smart, getting the best high school record in our class for all six years we were there.
After high school in 1963, we both went to Taiwan for university: National Taiwan University, even staying at the same dormitory.
After university, we came to Canada in 1967, he went to Saskatchewan University for Master degree and then McMaster University for a doctor Degree. I pursued my Master's degree at McGill University. We didn’t have much contact in those days because long distance calls were expensive.
Life changed a lot for the next twenty years; we became colleagues at Lafarge & Lavalin. We worked together to build the automated control system for the Cement factory, and worked together at other jobs later in our careers. John & I became close friends. 
I got a liver problem in 1993 and needed a life saving transplant operation. At that time I thought I could only live for ten more years. But I was lucky, after 29 years, I am still alive and John became my best friend in Montreal. 
This is quite a remarkable journey over seventy years and will be remembered forever.


Nous sommes profondément attristés par la perte de notre vice-président de l’Association Shunde. Il va nous manquer. Nos pensées sont avec son épouse et sa famille.

Dear Jackie & family,
Even though we have been friends for a few short years we have wonderful memories of you and John. The trip to Prince Edward Island was the beginning of our friendship which followed with intimate dinners for four of us trying new restaurants and cuisines.
It was such a shock when we found out that John was in a coma. It was such a privilege that God granted to us to be able to spend a little time on his last night. John you were a gentle soul. It was a privilege to be your friend and may God grant you eternal rest. Jackie  our hearts are full of sorrow  for your great loss and  I feel greatly for You.

Life is so unpredictable. Our time spent together weren't that many. Your sudden passing left a big hole in the family that can never be replaced.  We would reminisce with fond memories the short and sweet reunions that we had over the years, especially your time in Australia.
