It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Benny Lam on June 3, 2020, age 89, at the CHSLD Argyle in Montreal, Canada. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ruth Koo Lam. Also by his endearing daughter, Maria Lam; grandchildren, Kyle and Tanika Weekes and great-grandchild Taymon Alexander. He will be mourned by his brother Charles Lam and his many nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by many others that knew him; both family and friends.
Born on November 18, 1930 in Hong Kong, Benny attended many prestigious schools. Benny met Ruth at the Hong Kong Art Club. In 1954, Benny and Ruth came to Canada to further his studies. First, a Bachelor degree from Mount Allison University. Second, a Master degree from University of New Brunswick. Finally, a PHD from McGill University in Montreal. On September 28, 1957, Benny and Ruth got married.
He had an exceptionally successful career as a Scientist and a Senior Engineer. He was recently interviewed and recognized for his many inventions and patents. He was extremely proud of 2 major achievements. They are 1) The Doppler Four Beam Leaky Wave Janus Antenna and 2) for his Strip Line Antenna while being employed at Canadian Marconi. He retired from Marconi in 1993. He loved golf, his Spanish guitar, ballroom dancing, and had a sense of humor that made many people laugh.
Benny was a pillar and highly respected within the Montreal Chinese Community: Secretary General of the Montreal Chinese United Center, Charter member of the Old Montreal Rotary Club, Treasurer of the Chinese Cultural Center, Director of Chinese Family Service, Honorary Advisor of the Chinese Folk Dance Group of Montreal.
He also dedicated his work and collaboration for 47 years with Montreal Chinese Community Radio & TV Assoc. Inc. and 36 years with the prestigious Miss Chinese Montreal Pageant (1984-2020, consecutively in North America)).
