Born in St. Louis, he grew up in nearby Fenton MO. Mike proudly earned his undergraduate degree (BSW) at Mizzou where he met his wife of 37 years, Cindy Hahn Liberton. In 1981 they left the icy Midwest for sunny skies in Florida.
Mike lived a life of service to mankind and nature. As a social worker, he helped innumerable children and families in trouble. After-hours he was a voice for nature in his adopted state. He served as volunteer steward for a Nature Conservancy preserve, and sat on the Hernando County Sensitive Lands Advisory Committee. A voracious birder to the end, he was past President of Hernando Audubon Society, led Christmas Bird Counts for more than 20 years, and completed a "Big Year" in 2014, documenting 433 North American bird species.
Mike (AKA "Mike Fink, King of the River") loved his home on the Withlacoochee River, and added his tree house to the property in 2016. Never bored, he dabbled in art and music his entire life.
Mike is preceded by his parents Joe and Dorothy Liberton; brothers, Joe and Gary; he is survived by Tom, Kenny, Barb and Danny Liberton; sisters-in-law, Patti Liberton and Amy Hahn. "Uncle Mike" will be missed by Dana Liberton, Stephen Liberton, Michelle Liberton, Jeanne O'Neal, Nichole Dawsey, Emily Krafve, Cecilia Opper and Christopher Liberton. He will be fondly remembered by dozens of cousins and scores of friends.
Mike asks that you give generously to Voices for Children of North Central Florida, PO Box 4062, Ocala, FL 34478. (more info: [email protected]) A Florida riverside celebration of life is being planned.
Please consider having a Mass said in Mike's honor. And pause to hug a tree.
