Lorna Baker Lowe’s Tribute

“This world is but canvas to our imaginations.” [ii] ………..…and the canvas of Lorna’s world was full!

The family members, best friends, and trusted business associates were all blessed to be part of the landscape that was the life of Lorna Lowe. Lorna Baker Lowe was born to Georgina H. Baker and Marcus E. Baker in Killeen, Texas (November 29,1953). Lorna was the daughter of a military parent, who retired and moved the family to Brooksville in 1966. Other than a few years away to explore (she lived in Gillette, WY, and Houston, TX), Lorna was happiest living in her pastoral hometown of Brooksville, Florida.

Lorna’s world was her family, and they were painted in a picture depicting the love, support, and vitality that was her hallmark, and included her husband, Wayne Lowe whom she married in 1986; her children, Kristy Hinzman-Gay and Joseph S. Hinzman; grandchildren, Ella Gay, Ernie Gay and Emmett Gay; sisters, Rowena (Baker) Flanders Ramos and Irene (Baker) Horine; and preceded in death by her brothers, Robert E. Baker and Marcus E. Baker, Jr.  Her life was highlighted with her extra-curricular activities with family and friends that embodied her innate drive and the verve for life she exemplified every day.

Lorna was a Language Arts teacher in Hernando County from 1984-2004, where her tenacity and dedication to education characterized her zeal for teaching.  She conducted numerous professional development trainings on the most current, effective, educational pedagogy that helped improve the efficacy of educator teaching practices.  As a master teacher, she had stated as a Teacher of the Year for Central High School, “I wanted to do more than teach a subject, I wanted to share…that learning of any kind is exciting.” The impressions she left across the skyline of all her student’s lives included teaching all students to love literature and writing and yielded life-long learners that she “excited” and who continued to go back and visit her every year. Through cheerleader sponsor, senior class sponsor, yearbook, student council advisor, BETA club sponsor, Mentor teacher, and school advisory council, Lorna made a lasting impact.

The illustrations of her administrative expertise spanned from 2004-2014. She brought AP to Hernando High School, was Assistant Principal at West Hernando Middle School, and Nature Coast High School, and performed many of the necessary duties of assistant principal, with long days and longer nights, creating pivotal plans to execute curriculum in exciting ways that would lead to increased student performance. She was called a, “teacher’s administrator,” and was admired and respected by staff that knew her, or enjoyed the vista of the programs or curricular design she left behind. Through her devotion to her job and her steadfast and driven nature, she was able to lead with passion and positively influence children’s lives and improve school culture where she had numerous friends inside and outside of work.

Lorna had many close friends that colored the panorama of her life. She was dependable and dedicated, fun and witty and caring and forthright, reflecting the best qualities that made up the backdrop of all her relationships. She was the friend who was the most faithful; the confidant who was the most trusted; the partner who worked the hardest; she was the friend who was the “sister” soul mate few are ever fortunate enough to have.

The pallet of her life continued after she retired from working in the Hernando County School District.  Lorna became an Educational Consultant for the Orlando Torah Academy, Assistant Principal of Central Florida Preparatory, and Principal of Orange County National and Director of The Crestwell School in Fort Myers, Florida.

Her passion for education also led her to write successful charters for Mater Brighton Lakes in Osceola and Orlando Polytechnic Academy Charter as Board Chair, which will be opening in 2020.

While the setting of Lorna’s life had its curves, sometimes unseen, family, friends, and work colored the canvas of Lorna’s life that was painted with love, laughter and her loyalty.

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined,

he will meet with success unexpected in common hours.” [iii]

Every day, she will be greatly missed, but her fruitful endeavors will prove that the landscape of all her successes will continue as her legacy. Rest in Peace. We Love You.

A Visitation for family and friends will take place from 10:00-11:00am, Saturday, October 13, 2018 in the Hernando High School Gymnasium, where a Memorial Service will begin at 11:00am, with Pastor Bill Pope officiating.
