Born June 15, 1950 in Brooksville, Florida, he was the son of the late Leamon & H. Irene (Kimbrough) Varn. He was born and raised in Brooksville and played football, baseball, and was a disc thrower in high school. Like his dad, he was a catcher on the baseball team.
Leamon loved his family! Beginning with his three sons, born in the early 70’s, his family grew in 1980 when he married Christine, and she had one son. In 1991, they met Chris, who became a very close “adopted” daughter. This family continued to grow throughout the years to include many more family members to love. In 2013 one of these family members had four legs-Bandit! (from the rescue shelter in Marianna). Our Jack Russell/Yorkie mix, as seen in the picture, blessed our home. Leamon taught Bandit to hunt lizards, and you often saw the two of them walking along the fence together. Leamon would poke a twig in behind the fence posts to flip out a lizard for Bandit to catch.
Leamon was a drag racing enthusiast who was not only a spectator, but participated as well! Leamon won several trophies from Tampa Drag Way and Lakeland International Raceway in his green Chevy Nova. He was an avid car lover, who started showing cars in 1992. One of his favorite cars included the green/grey metallic 1996 Chevy Impala. After being influenced by Eric, Leamon was lured into the world of motorcycles. He then purchased his first bike, a 2000 Harley Road King, with flames.
Art was another of Leamon’s hobbies. His artworks excited the grandchildren on birthday and holiday cards and envelopes over the years. If you received one, it was a special gift to treasure. During the 60’s he airbrushed at the Florida State Fair. In the summer he was hired by Ed (Big Daddy) Roth’s “Rat's Hole” in Daytona Beach. In 1969 he was featured in Rat’s Hole sales catalog.
Leamon had an outstanding career in the concrete industry; it was his niche in life. Leamon was a dedicated, loyal, employee to the many companies for which he worked. Early in his career, Leamon worked for Florida Mining and Materials/CEMEX Inc. In 1991 he was hired by W. R. Grace & Co., Grace Construction Products Division. In 1997, Grace awarded Leamon the very high honor of “Sales Master of the Year.” Leamon retired from Grace in 2008.
